Mount Mercy University captured the 2026 Heart of America Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Championship on Sunday, defeating No. 3 seed William Woods University in a high-scoring 17-7 title game to claim the conference crown and an automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament.
William Woods jumped out early in the championship game, scoring first in the opening inning and building a 6-2 lead through six innings behind timely hitting and opportunistic baserunning.
But Mount Mercy delivered one of the most explosive innings of the tournament when it mattered most.
Trailing 6-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Mustangs erupted for a game-changing rally, scoring multiple runs on a mix of walks, sacrifice flies, and clutch hits to tie the game at 6-6. From there, Mount Mercy kept the pressure on, continuing to add runs across the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to pull away for a commanding 17-7 victory.
The offensive surge included key RBI contributions throughout the lineup, with Mount Mercy finishing the game with 13 hits, 16 walks, and 15 RBIs in a relentless performance at the plate.
William Woods, who had advanced through the winners bracket, was unable to slow the Mustangs' momentum in the late innings after controlling much of the first half of the game.
Mount Mercy's path to the championship included a 13-6 win over Grand View, a 6-1 victory over Missouri Baptist, and a 4-2 semifinal win over MidAmerica Nazarene to reach the title game. William Woods reached the final after a 10-8 winners bracket victory over MidAmerica Nazarene.
With the win, Mount Mercy secures its place as Heart Conference champions and earns the league's automatic bid to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Baseball National Championship.
William Woods also earned an automatic berth into the NAIA Opening Round after reaching the championship game.
The NAIA Baseball Opening Round will take place May 11–14 at campus sites, with the 69th annual NAIA Baseball World Series scheduled for May 22–30 at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho.
